Mobile Medical Units

The Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) are an initiative undertaken by Stavros Niarchos Foundation and are implemented by the non-profit-making organization Regeneration & Progress in cooperation with Health Units SA (AEMY SA) under the scientific supervision of the 1st Orthopedic Clinic of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA), with the exclusive financial support of SNF.

Having launched action in January 2014, the experienced scientific staff with various specialties and two fully-equipped MMUs make up an innovative and holistic health promotion programme.

Their aim is to provide free Primary Health Care (PHC) to the permanent residents of hard-to-reach islands and remote regions all over Greece.

The MMUs carry out three (3) missions each month in order to meet the basic need of all residents of Greece for open access to high-quality integrated health services through the use of specialized medical equipment.

The MMUs are equipped, among others, with a digital mammography unit, a dental unit, a portable X-ray machine and a bone density scanner, enabling the scientific staff to set up and organize a clinic in the most suitable public space of each area in no more than two hours. Each mission is individualized, taking into account the special needs of the local community.

The members of our medical team, who are highly trained and thoroughly experienced scientists, are the cornerstone of the programme and contribute voluntarily to our special aim, offering their services selflessly and consistently and acting with a deep sense of responsibility.

Following modern international standards, we transform our vision into action. We carry on the action of the Mobile Medical Units all over Greece, which fills our lives with responsibility and hope, since we contribute actively to upgrading people’s quality of life through health promotion and prevention. We move on, having courage and team spirit and remaining true to our values, and we stand by our fellow citizens, being sensitive to their particular needs.
